Year End Message

Reflecting on 2023, the mantra "we do hard things" has been a standout theme. Our strength in tackling complex challenges is a key value we bring to Ontario municipalities. Understanding the demanding nature of local government, we take pride in helping ease some of the more time-consuming responsibilities.

A prime example of this capability is our newly launched Automated Speed Enforcement program. This complex project would be impractical for many municipalities to handle independently. Our turnkey program, soon to be available province-wide, provides communities with a vital new tool to enhance resident safety. The pilot program with the City of Barrie, launched in November, has been exciting to watch, and we eagerly anticipate expanding in response to widespread demand across Ontario.

In the realm of cybersecurity, a formidable challenge for some municipalities, our Cyber Incident Management for Ontario Municipalities (CIMOM) ensures that experts are readily available in the event of a breach. We’re investigating a Protective Association as an alternative financing tool for municipal cyber risk. A committee of your colleagues from across Ontario’s municipalities are working hard to launch this in 2024.

The housing crisis, a pressing concern for many Ontarians in recent years, has prompted municipalities to seek innovative ways to expedite development. In response, we are pleased to offer a digital permitting tool tailored to address this specific challenge. We’re proud to do our part in helping members face an incredibly challenging problem.

The past year has brought about several noteworthy changes to the AMO/LAS office and our team. In a move toward a more contemporary and functional workspace, AMO will soon be relocating to 155 University Avenue. As we bid farewell to Eleonore Schneider and Nicholas Ruder, extending our best wishes for their future endeavors, we are equally thrilled to welcome back Jason Hagan to the team as a Program Manager.

In closing, I extend my gratitude to the LAS Board for their steadfast support, the LAS team for consistently rising to meet new challenges, and the municipalities across Ontario that recognize the value in what we do.

As we approach the holiday season, I wish everyone the very best, and I eagerly anticipate the challenges and opportunities that 2024 will bring.

Warm regards,
Judy Dezell
