The Importance of Photometric Design

Since the invention of the light bulb in the 1800’s, lighting technology has remained largely unchanged.  Electricity passes through a wire or a gas, which causes it to glow, giving off light in all directions.  That is the way it has been for well over 100 years.  That is, until now. 

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) operate in a similar fashion, except that the light comes from solid matter. LEDs have taken over the lighting industry and perfected to the point that they are now the lightbulb of choice for most applications. 

With LED technology, it is not always as easy as replacing one lamp with another.  The directional nature of LEDs means that you can focus light only where needed, without the need for reflectors.  This reduces the amount of wasted light and increases efficiency of the system, but requires careful planning to make sure it shines where needed, and at adequate levels. 

With their ice out for the summer, many municipalities will be looking at lighting upgrades to their arenas.  When going through this process, it is important to incorporate proper photometric design to ensure optimization of the lighting system for a range of different uses.
