The summer of 2018 has already seen its fair share of hot days.  To find relief from the heat, many turn to beaches or cottages offering access to lakes.  Spending time on the water should be filled with fun and memories.

To ensure your family and friends stay safe, follow these water and dock safety tips:
  • Make sure that all water equipment is insured such as boats, seadoos, kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, etc.
  • Review water safety with your family and friends. Ensure operators have the required Pleasure Craft Operators licence for the vessel and that there are adequate lifejackets and/or Personal Floatation Devices.
  • Ensure life-saving equipment is readily accessible.
  • Be aware of changes in water levels to prevent accidental collision with unseen hazards.
  • Ensure road safety when towing a boat and trailer by inspecting the lights, tires, brakes, bearings, and safety chains before you set off.
  • Supervise children when in and around water and while using watercraft. Small children should always wear life jackets when around water.
  • Don’t swim alone, during a storm, after dark, or under the influence of alcohol.
  • Make sure your boat is secured to the dock when loading and unloading.
  • When fishing be sure to remove hooks before transporting rods.
  • Do not operate your boat under the influence of alcohol. Tickets received on the water can affect your driving privileges on land.
  • Have your boat professionally winterized.
  • Ensure your liability limit is sufficient for the Marina’s requirements.
